Just Because You Have a Great Idea Doesn’t Mean It's Manufacturable We have all read and heard about the spectacular flameouts that have befallen many well-funded hardware startups. It takes time, a lot of money, immense talent, and expert know-how to bring hardware to market and build a manufacturing company.
Hardware startups don’t get off the ground in 10, 12, or 16 weeks. In that timeframe, you might be able to get through multiple iterations of your prototype, get early customer traction, and work on some DFM (Design For Manufacturability) — but getting from working prototype to even small batch manufacturing is difficult. Some of the primary reasons that hardware manufacturing companies fail include:
- Creating a design that cannot be manufactured.
- Not prototyping a design rigorously enough.
- Failing to control the product cost and gross margin.
- Not understanding obligations regarding regulatory certifications.
- Selecting the wrong partner to assist you in manufacturing.
- Not creating a good quality plan for scalability early in the manufacturing process.
- Not establishing and/or maintaining a realistic schedule.
